With reference to your telegram of the 16th of August received through the Governor of Singapore, I have the honour to transmit the enclosed copies (100) of a report by Mr. E. A. M. Williams, Correspondent of the Commercial Intelligence Branch of the Board of Trade, on the principal articles of trade with Germany and Austria done through Hongkong. I employed Mr. Williams for this work as there is no one in the Government Service so well qualified

to do it.

Your telegram asked for samples of the leading articles and in this connection I would refer you to Hr. Williams'

remarks on the subject. As the collection of a set of samples would

occupy some two or three months and would cost a good deal of money,

I shall be obliged for your instructions by telegraph as to whether

you desire them to be sent at the coat of this Colony or otherwise.
